Our founder, Solomon L. Garrison, begins his practice of law in Hamilton County, Indiana.
Worth H. Castor joins Solomon L. Garrison and establishes a law practice known as “Garrison and Castor”. Garrison and Castor practice law out of their office in the upper level of the old American National Bank in downtown Noblesville, Indiana.
Worth H. Castor became a prominent figure in local law and government. He served as the Attorney for Hamilton County, Indiana during the late 1950s, cementing the firm’s ties to the community. Throughout the 1940s–50s, Castor practiced in Noblesville, building the firm’s reputation as a trusted local practice.
By the 1960s, attorney Melvin A. Richards (1939–2003) had joined Castor as a partner. The firm became known as Castor & Richards, marking the first of many name changes. Richards would go on to be a cornerstone of the firm. During this era, the firm remained in Noblesville (near the county courthouse), handling general legal matters for local clients eventually moving its location to an office located at 1312 Maple Avenue in Noblesville, the location that continues to be used by the firm today.
The firm expanded with new talent. Attorney David M. Adams joined the partnership, and in 1977 a young attorney named Bruce A. Boje (1951–2024) became a partner. By 1979 the firm’s name had changed to Castor, Richards, Adams & Boje, reflecting its four partners. The late 1970s saw the firm’s lawyers begin to handle more complex litigation, bolstering its regional reputation.
Founding partner Worth H. Castor passed away in 1982. This marked the end of the firm’s first era. After Castor’s death, leadership of the firm passed to Melvin Richards, Bruce Boje, and David Adams. The firm name changed shortly after Castor’s death to Richards, Adams & Boje (with Castor’s name retired).
The firm’s composition continued to evolve. In 1980, attorney David Adams of the firm argued on behalf of the Noblesville Elks Lodge in BPOE Lodge 576 v. State, a notable Indiana Court of Appeals case. The next few years saw further changes: James “Jim” H. Pickering, Jr. (1954–2020) joined the firm in 1979 right after law school and became a partner by the mid-1980s. The firm name changed to Richards, Boje & Pickering as Adams departed around this time (Adams left the firm by the mid-1980s). Firm attorneys continue to handle significant appellate cases in this era – for example, Melvin Richards and Bruce Boje represented a party in Community Hospital of Anderson v. McKnight before the Indiana Supreme Court. (mid-1980s). By the late 1980s, the firm’s three named partners were Richards, Boje, and Pickering, and the firm had established itself as a respected litigation firm in central Indiana.
Two new attorneys, Eric J. Benner and Robert C. Becker, joined the firm (both admitted to the Indiana bar in 1989) and began practicing at 1312 Maple Avenue under the mentorship of the senior partners. Both would soon rise to prominence in the firm.
As Benner and Becker advanced, the firm continued to be known as Richards, Boje & Pickering. Melvin Richards, Jim Pickering and Bruce Boje were still leading the practice, with the younger lawyers supporting the partners.
Both Eric Benner and Robert Becker became partners as the decade progressed. With their addition, the firm’s name expanded to Richards, Boje, Pickering, Benner & Becker by the end of the 1990s. The name change signified the inclusion of the new generation. The firm’s growth during this period was largely organic – its reputation for quality representation led to client referrals and a broader client base across central Indiana. In addition to private practice, the firm’s lawyers were active in professional associations; for example, Robert C. Becker served as President of the Hamilton County Bar Association in 2006–2007 (capping his contributions in the local legal community).
Carl A. Markovich came on board as a law clerk in 1997 and became an associate upon admission to the bar in 1999.
Laurie D. Johnson joined the practice as a law clerk while in law school after working for the Clerk of the Indiana Court of Appeals, Supreme Court and Tax Court.
Laurie joins the firm as an Associate Attorney.
Longtime senior partner Melvin A. Richards passed away in 2003. Richards had been a driving force in the firm since the 1960s, and his death marked a moment of transition for the firm with Bruce A. Boje and James H. Pickering stepping into their new roles as Senior Partners. Despite this loss, the firm continued operating under the established name Richards, Boje, Pickering, Benner & Becker (often abbreviated “RBPBB”). The remaining partners – Boje, Pickering, Benner, and Becker – carried on the firm’s legacy of client service. By this time, the firm had been serving the community for over 75 years. Carl Markovich was elevated to partner in the same year Richards passed, though the firm name was not changed at that time.
Timothy J. Hixson joined as a law clerk in 2005 and became an Associate Attorney in 2006.
Alicia Adcock is hired as a law clerk while attending law school and joins the firm as an Associate Attorney in 2010.
Under the mentorship of Boje, Pickering, Benner, and Becker, the new group of younger Associate Attorneys developed their careers and expand. The firm has remained at its longtime Noblesville location on Maple Avenue, continuing to serve Hamilton County and surrounding areas with a wide range of practice areas (from personal injury and criminal defense to family law, probate and estate, real estate and business litigation). Community involvement also continued: for example, Carl Markovich served in youth sports leagues and later took on leadership roles in the bar association. The firm’s culture of community engagement and professional excellence became a hallmark of its identity.
Tim Hixson becomes a partner.
Laurie Johnson and Alicia Adcock become the first female partners in the firm’s history.
The firm formally changed its name to Boje, Benner, Becker, Markovich & Hixson, LLP, signaling a new era. This name dropped the now-departed Richards and Pickering, and added Markovich and Hixson to the name. The new name was in place by the mid 2010s. Under this banner, the firm continued its practice in Noblesville with the same address and a team of seven attorneys, offering personal consultations and broad legal expertise to clients across central Indiana.
The firm, since the late 1990’s has operated as Richards, Boje, Pickering, Benner & Becker (“RBPBB”), and maintained a stable team of about six to seven attorneys. In 2010, the firm name was updated to Boje, Benner, Becker, Markovich, and Hixson, LLP, acknowledging the passing of Mel Richards and the retirement of Jim Pickering. With decades of continuity, it was noted that very few attorneys had ever worked at the firm over its long history (underscoring its low turnover and close-knit partnership). Partners and associates of the firm were recognized in the legal community; for instance, Carl Markovich served as President of the Hamilton County Bar Association in 2020, continuing a tradition of leadership (earlier, Robert Becker had also led the bar in 2006–07 as noted and Eric Benner serving as an officer of the Hamilton County Bar Association in the 1990’s). Further, our attorneys have served as both City and County attorneys, on the board of the Hamilton County Alcohol Beverage Commission and legal counsel for the Hamilton County Merit Board. Throughout the 2010s, the firm celebrated milestones such as its 90th anniversary in 2016, and it remained known for its “caring, common-sense approach” and litigation success, carrying on the values instilled by Castor, Richards, and their successors.
Longtime partner James H. “Jim” Pickering, Jr. passed away in October 2020, after a 37-year career with the firm. His passing, along with the earlier losses of Richards (2003) and the approaching retirement of Boje, signaled a generational shift. By 2020, the active partners were Bruce Boje, Eric Benner, Robert Becker, Carl Markovich, Tim Hixson, Laurie Johnson and Alicia Adcock.
Senior partner Bruce A. Boje passed away in June 2024 at the age of 72. Boje had been with the firm for 47 years, joining in the 1970s and guiding it through multiple generations. His death was felt deeply in the community – Bruce was remembered as a beloved figure known for his integrity and generous spirit. Even after his passing, the firm retained his name as a mark of respect and continuity. The remaining partners (Benner, Becker, Markovich, Hixson, Johnson and Adcock) carried on the firm’s operations, sustaining the legacy that Boje and his predecessors built.
Now in its 100th year, Boje, Benner, Becker, Markovich & Hixson, LLP stands as one of Hamilton County’s oldest and most respected law firms. It has continuously practiced in Noblesville since 1926, a century-long tenure marked by stable partnerships and community service. The firm today provides a wide range of legal services to clients in Hamilton County and the surrounding counties, upholding the tradition of “lasting relationships” and strong client advocacy established by its founders. Notably, the firm and its attorneys have been involved in the community through public service roles (from Worth Castor’s county attorney role in the 1950s to multiple partners leading the local bar association) and support of local civic causes. This enduring presence and involvement have cemented the firm’s reputation in central Indiana. The timeline of name changes – from Solomon Garrison (1926), Garrison & Castor (1931) to Castor & Richards (mid-20th century), then Castor, Richards, Adams & Boje (1979), Richards, Boje & Pickering (1980s), Richards, Boje, Pickering, Benner & Becker (late 1990s), and finally the current Boje, Benner, Becker, Markovich & Hixson – reflects the firm’s dynamic history of growth and continuity. Each era’s partners have contributed to a legacy of notable cases, from high-profile appeals in Indiana’s courts to countless local cases defending the interests of individuals, families, and businesses. Today, Boje, Benner, Becker, Markovich & Hixson, LLP continues to honor its heritage while serving the community with a commitment to professionalism and personal attention.
